Evening Devotional: Sweet Hour of Prayer

 Sweet Hour of Prayer

And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them asleep, and saith unto Peter, What, could ye not watch with me one hour? Matthew:26:40

The Hymn Sweet Hour of Prayer written by William Walford is inspiring and encouraging. It is a great song to meditate on in your quite time with God.

“Sweet Hour prayer! Sweet Hour of prayer That calls me from a world of care, And bids me at my Father’s throne
Make all my wants and wishes known.
In seasons of distress and grief,
My soul has often found relief,
And oft escaped the tempter’s snare,
By thy return, sweet hour of prayer!”

These lyrics reminds me of Gethsemane when my Savior Jesus Christ was filled with sorrow and troubled because what He was about to face had His soul overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. In the Gospel of Matthew chapter 26 after Jesus expressed His feelings of being overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death He told His disciples to stay here and keep watch with me.

We read shortly after this Jesus fell with His face to the ground and prayed, My Father, if it is possible may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will. Then He returned to the disciples and found them sleeping. Could you men not keep watch with me for one hour? He asked Peter.

Then Jesus goes on to say watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The Spirit is willing but the body is weak.

Jesus paid a price we could not pay for a debt He did not owe. Yet we like the disciples can not keep watch for one hour. When we say we are praying for our brothers and sisters are we really praying?

Sweet Hour of Prayer is a beautiful Hymn that we love to sing but do we really give God an hour in prayer? To be honest many times we can’t give God ten minutes of our time in prayer. Prayer gives us the strength to accept the Fathers will even when it brings great pain and suffering. Communing with the Father in prayer gives us peace and helps us to focus.

Jesus never lost focus on His purpose to redeem men. There is no greater love than the love He showed for mankind on Calvary. Sometimes we like Jesus may feel forsaken by God.

The bible says in Matthew 27:50 When Jesus cried out again in a loud voice, He gave up His Spirit.

After this the supernatural happened. Maybe we like Jesus need to accept the will of the Father even when we feel forsaken because we know that if God brings us to it. He will definitely bring us through it. When Jesus prayed let this cup pass from me, if it was God’s will it would have, but God had us on His mind. Although the pain was overwhelming but God had the redemption of His people on His mind because He has loved us with an everlasting love.

In your quite time with God you may have been praying to God, pleading with Him to let this cup pass from you but God says if you never go through trials you’ll never see the manifestation of my Power. So I’m gonna let you suffer for a little while and in your suffering you will see my glory, you will believe I’m a deliverer, your testimony will draw people to me, your witness will be powerful, people will know you have been in my presence, you won’t be ashamed to tell a dying world Jesus is coming back and we need to be ready. Spending time in prayer is never time waisted.

Let us pray, Lord Jesus help us to spend time with you in prayer. Help us to accept your will even when it cause discomfort and pain. Help us to realize your purpose for our lives is far greater than our pain and no matter what we go through on earth may we never allow it to turn us away from you. May your will be done in our lives in Jesus name. Amen
